ArtworxTO Spotlight: Tanveer Alam

Born in raised in Montreal, Tanveer Alam started his training in the Indian classical dance form of Kathak with Sudeshna Maulik. In 2016, he moved to Toronto to pursue further training with his guru Sandhya Desai, and work towards a professional dance career. Alam is also a 2019 graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. He has performed in the works of Pandit Birju Maharaj, Janak Khendry, Rina Singha, Lata Pada, Brandy Leary, Noémie Lafrance, Harikishan S. Nair, Sanjukta Sinha, and Lucy Rupert. An emerging choreographer, he hopes to carry forward Kathak in relation to his own truths as a diasporic artist, as well as create a personal repertoire which reflects on his personal curiosities within the Kathak tradition. His work has been presented at Dance Ontario DanceWeekend, SummerWorks Festival, Festival of Recorded Movement, MAI – Montréal, arts interculturels, and Tangente to name a few. Alam has been supported by The Canada Council for the Arts, Toronto Arts Council, and Ontario Arts Council. Across the 2020/21 season he is a curated artist of The Sadhana Project Creative Residency initiative by Anandam Dance Theatre, a commissioned artist by the CanAsian Dance Festival’s Grit Short Dances Series, and is currently working with the international choreographer, Padmini Chettur.
